2 Classic Books All Booklovers Need To Read

Books are the gateway to brand new worlds, fantastic adventures and so much more. Some books have stood the test of time because of their ability to transport readers into the minds and lives of others. Some of the books are sad, some shocking and some just outright bizarre. But that’s what makes a book good, the ability to leave you sitting in stunned silence once you’ve read the last sentence. These following books are all controversial in their own way, but with excellent writing and themes they need to be read by everyone.

  1. Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov

Never thought you’d feel sympathy for a man who takes advantage of his young step-daughter? Nobody did, but you can’t help to sympathize with the charming Humbert Humbert. He’s a European smitten with a American girl who is twelve years old and yet there are so many layers to the story that it is hard to see things in black and white. Humbert is undoubtedly a monster (Nabokov himself said this), but he is a charming one. An unreliable narrator and a madman in love, this is one book that will truly leave you questioning things. As Humbert himself said, “Lolita, light of my life, fire of my loins. My sin, my soul.” Decide for yourself how much of it is sin and how much of it is soul.

  1. Lord of the Flies by William Golding

Before Hunger Games introduced the idea of children murdering each other, there was Lord of the Flies. It tells the tale of young schoolboys stranded on an island. Things soon start going wrong when power struggles and bloodlust consumes them. It’s a vicious, bloody tale that will leave you shaken by how much it rings true.
